A. N. Veselovsky initially saw his academic mission in studying the history of world literature. To get a good idea of his subject, after graduating from Moscow University, he went abroad. He lived in diff erent European countries under diff erent statuses for about 10 years. His experience allowed him to perfectly navigate foreign academia, and personal contacts with many outstanding foreign scientists — to promote Russian philological thought to an international level. One of the most striking examples of such cultural and scientifi c exchange is his review article, "Social Ideals and Artistic Ideals”. Th is article has helped us discover much about the views of A. N. Veselovsky on the history of ideals. Th e essays, names, concepts that were relevant in his time, which he discusses in his article, are of considerable benefi t to the understanding of his own ideas.
